September 03, 2010The SCF Group's fleet has increased further with the delivery of a supply vessel for the offshore oil producing platforms, named SCF Sakhalin. The SCF Sakhalin is a supply vessel of the enhanced ice class and is on a long-term charter by Exxon Neftegas Ltd. to meet the demands of the producing platform for the Sakhalin-1 Project. Referring to the SCF Sakhalin delivery, Aleksandr Kurtynin, Sovcomflot Vice-President, commented: "Expanding our fleet of supply vessels to meet the needs of producing platforms is an important element of the Sovcomflot investment programme. The Sovcomflot Development Strategy for 2010-2015, approved by the Board of Directors, envisages "the creation of a national integrated offshore upstream services provider, centered on Sovcomflot, with a specific focus on operating in the harsh environment and ice conditions".

Early in his career he joined KaMeWa (Rolls-Royce) in sales including heading the company's operation in Asia from Hong Kong, in his last five years with the company he held the position of Sales & Marketing Director. Damen Shipyards Group is proud to announce the sale of its first-ever Twin Axe Catamaran, the Damen High Speed Support Vessel (HSSV) 2610, which is particularly suited for the offshore wind industry. Marineco UK, based in Edinburgh, Scotland, recently signed for the new HSSV 2610 with an option for a second. The Scottish firm already has an extensive Damen fleet.
In August Cargotec received a further conversion contract from Stena Line for work onboard its 43,487gt RoPax vessel Stena Britannica. MacGregor equipment and conversion work for Stena Britannica includes the supply of two watertight side-hinged bulkhead doors for the lower hold and a new top-hinged passenger door on deck 8 that opens inwards. This new order has been added to earlier Stena conversion contracts awarded to Cargotec for six RoPax vessels, which were announced in April and June.

September 02, 2010Sep. 2, 2010 - Cargotec has signed a contract to deliver MacGregor hatch covers for six 48,700 dwt open-hatch cargo ships ordered by Norwegian shipowner Grieg Shipping. The ships will be built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea. The order is booked into the third quarter 2010 order intake. Hatch covers will be fabricated at Cargotec's partner plant in China and they are planned for delivery 2012 until 2013. This order is an addition to the earlier announced contract for a total of 24 environmentally-friendly variable frequency drive (VFD) MacGregor cargo cranes for the same newbuildings.
Polarcus Limited has announced that Polarcus Asima AS, a member of the Polarcus Group, today took delivery of POLARCUS ASIMA, the third and most sophisticated 3D seismic vessel to date to join the Polarcus fleet. The vessel was built at Drydocks World - Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and is transiting directly to the Black Sea to commence a charter for Rosneft.

ClassNK has released new guidelines specifically for Offshore Support Vessels (OSV) and other workboats The new guidelines, which are being released in both English and Chinese, compile all of the ClassNK rules applicable to the construction and survey of tugs, OSVs, Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels and other work boats. Designed to be a complete and easy to use reference for work boat designers, builders, and operators, the new guidelines include complete chapters on work boat construction, installations, and positioning systems, as well as specific requirements for specialized work boats like fire fighting vessels.
Sep. 4, 2010 - Petroleo Brasileiro SA, Latin America's largest company by market value, plans to raise as much as 129 billion reais ($75 billion) in the world's largest share sale as it seeks cash to develop offshore oil fields. The shares rose 4.4 percent for the biggest gain since May. Brazil's state-controlled oil producer will offer as many as 1.59 billion new preferred shares and 2.17 billion new voting shares, according to a regulatory filing today. The company may also sell an additional 564 million preferred or voting shares depending on demand, with the price to be announced Sept. 23. The offer includes about $42.5 billion Petrobras will sell to Brazil in exchange for the right to develop oil reserves.
September 02, 2010Sep. 2, 2010 - China plans to spend 250 billion to 300 billion yuan ($36.71 billion-$44.05 billion) under its new five-year development plan to boost offshore oil production, the official China Securities Journal reported on Thursday. The investment aims to increase China's offshore oil production capacity by 50 million metric tonnes by 2015, the newspaper reported, citing Jin Xiaojian, general manager at CNOOC's engineering department. CNOOC is China's top oil and gas producer.

September 01, 2010Aug. 31, 2010 - For 500 years, commodity traders have been trying to conquer the treacherous waters of the Russian Arctic passage - aware of its potential as a lucrative short-cut shipping route. The path is blocked all winter and only smaller cargo vessels manage to navigate through the icebergs for two to three months each summer. But this week, the first commercial supertanker has succeeded in traversing the strait. Carrying 70,000 tonnes of gas from Murmansk in Russia destined for Ningbo in China, the feat has moved the difficult Northern Sea Route a step closer to rivalling the dominant Suez Canal in the south.
Aug. 31, 2010 - Sri Lanka has signed a $450 million deal with China Merchants Holdings and local conglomerate Aitken Spence SPEN.CM to boost the Colombo port's cargo-handling capacity, a official said on Tuesday. The joint venture will build the first of three planned terminals in the Colombo port. Each is expected to add the capability to handle an additional 2.5 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEU). The port now handles 4.5 million TEU.
Hamworthy, the marine and offshore fluid handling systems specialist, has secured a key reference in Brazil's growing offshore market, following the award of the contract to supply pumps and pump systems for the Papa Terra FPSO by BW Offshore.
August 30, 2010Shipping operator China Cosco has earmarked US$3.2 billion for capital spending between 2010 and 2013 to pay for new ships it ordered earlier, amid a rebound in the global shipping market. China Cosco, the listed flagship of state-owned China Ocean Shipping (Group) Co, said it plans to take delivery of 43 container ships with a total capacity of 345,000 TEUs, as well as 22 dry bulk vessels with a total capacity of 3.42 million deadweight tonnes. The company said it has no plans to make new ship orders this year.
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), the world's second largest shipbuilder, said on August 27 it won a $320 million order to build eight ethylene carriers from Singapore. DSME said in a statement it would deliver the ships to Singapore's Woodside Holding International Shipping by the third quarter of 2013.
Jadaf Dubai and Goltens signed the second long-term ground development lease agreement (Musataha). The agreement was entered into with Goltens, global ship repair and maintenance specialist, for a ship building and ship repair facility at the Industrial Precinct of Dubai Maritime City. Under the Musataha lease agreement, DMC - Industrial Precinct plots 6 and 7 measuring about 23,000 square metres will be leased to Golten Co- Dubai Branch for a period of 25 years. During the past five years, Goltens has established seven new global repair centres, lifting its annual ship repair revenue from $90 million in 2005 to approximately $200 million in 2010. The new agreement will strengthen Jadaf Dubai's stronghold in the ship building and ship repair market. The Industrial Precinct is a part of Maritime City that is dedicated to ship repair facilities, yacht repair and manufacturing, as well as workshop units that service the needs of the maritime industry as a whole.
Oman Drydock Company ship repair yard under construction at the Port of Duqm on the Wusta coast will provide more than just vessel maintenance and repair services. The world class facility, scheduled to come into operation next March will also be fully equipped to deliver a broad array of specialist heavy engineering services covering, among other things, the fabrication of offshore structures and the conversion of mammoth ships into floating storage vessels. Additionally, as a fully integrated ship repair services hub with ambitions to emerge as the dry dock of choice in the Middle East ODC will also be equipped for bunkering, refueling, slops and sludge treatment, major steel outfitting, machinery overhaul and upgrade and all kinds of blasting and painting works. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering is ODC's strategic partner in the development and operation of the yard. Oman's Ministry of Transport and Communications is also playing a pivotal role in the establishment of the facility.
Shipping trade volumes returned to growth in the first half of 2010, according to new figures from the Irish Maritime Development Office (IMDO). The data show a continued strong performance of export volumes which have risen 5 per cent year-on-year.
August 29, 2010On August 29 Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin took part in the opening ceremony of the Russian section in the Russia-China oil pipeline, which took place in Russia's Far Eastern Amur region. "The implementation of this project is a crucial task for Russia and our Chinese friends. It means stabilization of supplies and energy balance for China, and for us it creates entry to new challenging markets, in this particular case, to the growing market of China," Putin said at the ceremony. The project is part of the East Siberia - Pacific oil pipeline, which was launched into operation in December 2009 and is designed to pump up to 1.6 million barrels (220,000 tons) of crude per day from Siberia to the Far East and then on to China and the Asia-Pacific region. Russia's largest oil company Rosneft, oil pipeline monopoly Transneft and China's state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) are partners in the project. In line with the contract, the Chinese side provided the Russian companies with a $25-billion loan to construct the pipeline. In exchange, the Russian side agreed to pump 15 million tons of oil per year via the pipeline in 2011-2030.
August 27, 2010Aug. 25, 2010 - A Russian gas tanker is this month making a historic voyage across the famed Northeast passage as receding ice opens up an elusive trade route from Asia to the West sought for centuries by explorers. The 114,564-tonne tanker Baltica, escorted by the world's two most powerful nuclear ice breakers, sailed from Russia's northernmost port of Murmansk on August 14. The largest vessel to ever navigate once-impassable route, the Baltica is due to deliver its cargo of gas condensate to China in the first weeks of September. Russia hopes to make the Arctic route a competitor to the Suez Canal and increase cargo traffic along its Siberian coast from two millions tonne a year now to 30 million tonnes profiting off taxes and the lease of its unique fleet of nuclear ice breakers.
